An Army of Lovers- A Mark Springer Opera
Mark Springer and Charlotte Horton have been working together for five years at Castello di Potentino on a series of concerts in August called ‘Concerti nel Cortile’ – Concerts in the Castle Courtyard.
The projects have been developing in scale and scope year-on-year. For this season it was decided to put on a new opera for three voices and piano based on Plutarch’s tale of the Sacred Band of Thebes, called Army of Lovers.
Written by noted composer Mark Springer, the libretto is by prize-winning novelist David Flusfeder, and Charlotte Horton, acclaimed wine-maker and castle restorer, will be the artistic director.
The piece is to be performed in the castle’s fortified courtyard with an interactive visual projection on its ancient facades. Award-winning director Eugene Jarecki and artist Georgina Hill will create the moving image.
The cast consists of three internationally renowned singers:
- Derek Lee Ragin – Counter Tenor (voice of protagonist in Golden Globe-winning film, Farinelli)
- Alexander Robin Baker – Bass Baritone (hot off the stage from Coraline at the Barbican)
- Thomas Segen – Tenor (Seattle and Los Angeles opera companies)
